Bond of Love
The Madhubani art form, also known as Mithila painting, is said to have developed in the ancient Indian city of Mithila, the birthplace of Sita (wife of the Hindu Lord Rama). Mithila paintings, with their attractive, vibrant colours mixed with fingers, nibs, brushes and twigs, mostly depict mythological figures as well as people and their association with nature, and deities from ancient epics. Natural objects like the sun, the moon, and sacred plants like tulsi are also widely painted. This folk art form has five different styles with distinct features: Kachni, Bharni, Tantrik, Godna, and Kohbar.
This particular artwork is inspired by a popular piece of Kachni style of Madhubani art, a unique style that is mainly monochrome or made with only two colours. In this style, elaborate line paintings are made. The images are filled with closely drawn parallel lines or small dots.
The artwork here depicts two elephants who are bonded in love. Feeling each other with their trunks, they are standing under a tree that houses a peacock on either side. The intricate patterns done in pen using only two colours add a deep artistic touch to this piece.
When I started making this piece, I hadn’t anticipated myself to be so deeply attached to it, but the depth of the lines and patterns pulled me towards it. This is one of my favourite artworks, one that I cannot part with. If you like this piece, I would be happy to make one for your wall with colours of your choice. This folk art adds elegance and class to any room and also brings one a step closer to one’s roots.
Eternal Harmony
The beauty and depth of this artwork is beyond ordinary. A mandala always brings an aura of calmness and peace around it, but the extent of depth, interconnectedness, and uniqueness this piece carries makes it even more tranquil and alluring.
The term ‘mandala’, or ‘mandal’, comes from Sanskrit and translates to ‘circle’ in English. Carl Jung believed that mandala is the key to self-understanding and self-acceptance. It helps in knowing oneself more clearly, recognising unhealthy thoughts and behaviours, and moving closer to the centre of one’s actual being, leaving behind various illusions of the self that cloud and confine one’s psychological and spiritual vision.
This interlocked mandala contains two identical mandalas that are joined together, thereby representing the correlation of our lives to the lives of people around us. No matter how similar or dissimilar our lives are, they are always intertwined in some respect or the other, inching towards eternal harmony. The presence of subtle metallic shades has added to the charm of this piece. I wanted to add shades of Earth and sky, hence I used blue, yellow and green.
Blessings of the Universe
Mandalas come in vivid forms but a symbol like the ‘Flower of Life’ is a complex structure featuring dozens of circles arranged in an overlapping design. This incredible pattern is created with nineteen overlapping circles creating an image of perfectly symmetrical flowers.
The ‘Flower of Life’ symbol is one of the most fascinating geometric symbols of Sacred Geometry. It is believed to depict the fundamental forms of space and time, and that all life is part of a divine, geometric plan. This special symbol represents the cycle of life and is also known as the blueprint of the universe, containing the basis for the design of every atom, molecular structure, life form, and everything in existence. Many believe that if one begins to understand the Flower of Life, one can understand the complex inner and outer workings of the Universe. This ancient symbol, considered sacred in multiple cultures around the world, demonstrates that all consciousness arises from one source represented by the first circle.
This artwork uses the Flower of Life as the centrepiece and builds upon various mandala rings (10 rings of pattern and 11 coloured rings) that extend in continuation to the ends of the paper in perfect symmetry. Each ring of intricate pattern is alternated with a small, coloured ring in blue or gold. This thoughtful and creative artwork not only reflects artistic excellence and balance but also has a deeper spiritual connotation. As an artist, creating this piece amounted to uncountable hours, and it took me to the depths of my ‘being’, but the completion of each ring brought immense joy to my heart. By the time I signed off, I was exhilarated beyond words and had fallen in love with this artwork. I still can’t take my eyes off this one every time I look at it. This masterpiece would not only add to the aesthetics of one’s home but also bring deep, positive energy of the Universe to the surroundings.
